In Between: an exhibition of handmade paper art by Ewa RosiekBuszko

The words "In Between" define the artist's technique, which stretches between the extraordinary Japanese washi paper, magically transparent and delicate one, which the author of the exhibition used when working in Japan, and the rough and devoid of any subtlety paper which she has made by hand herself for many years in Poland.

Seeking most forceful ways of expression, the artist constantly chooses between largescale works and miniatures. She draws inspiration from the “silence” of delicate white washi, in which the essence of expression consists in a play of shades. The exhibition is partly inspired by Polish folk art, but also by fascinations over traditional Japanese art. The symbolism of some works is a blend of styles, enchantments and admiration for simplicity, asceticism and the means of communication.

“The title of my exhibition reflects my feelings after almost two years of pandemic. There used to be a lot of plans related to organizing exhibitions, creative activity and making new works, but life has written its own scenario. The outbreak of the pandemic altered  a number of  things, bringing about a wave of anxiety, reflections, analyses and changes in social behaviour. The recent months have once again suppressed the everyday hustle and bustle that dominated our lives over years. Now came the time to concentrate, to calm down and to ponder on what we have largely forgotten among the noise and incessant rush”, writes the author.

Ewa Rosiek-Buszko was born in Gliwice. She lives and works in Krakow. In 1979, she graduated from the Faculty of Interior Design at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts. Ms. Buszko has been creating handmade paper, fabric, and unique ceramics, as well as painting pastels and watercolour pictures. She is a certified teacher of art classes and also a cofounder and curator of Silesian weaving art group Przekaz (Message), operating since 1991. Ms. Buszko is a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (since 1979), a member of InSEA (the International Association for Education through Art) and in 20022014 a board member and vicepresident of the Artists Association of Educators of Ceramics and Sculpture. She is the originator of ongoing from 2003 project Paper Gami, within which she conducts workshops and lectures on handmade paper.

She was the author of the concept of the project Washi no fushigi. The mystery of paper realized in Poland and Japan in 2019-2020. She has presented her works during more than 250 exhibitions both at home and abroad, including UK, Austria, Japan, USA, and Germany.
