Library cards are issued at the Library Circulation Desk.

In order to use other libraries within the Jagiellonian University, one must register separately with each particular library.

The students who have an electronic student identity card can use it as a library card after having it activated at the Circulation Desk.

Registering with the Jagiellonian Library includes:

  • a pledge of compliance with the rules of using the Library;
  • confirming the veracity of personal data with one's handwritten signature;
  • a permission for one's personal data to be processed for the purpose of using the Library.

In conformity to the requirements of the Act on the Protection of Personal Data, the patron records are registered with the office of the Inspector General of the Protection of Personal Data.

While registering/prolonging, please submit/update your current e-mail address. It is to be used for:

  • notifying that a reserved book has checked in;
  • reminding of a proximity of the due date for checked out books;
  • sending a prompt request for a checked out book to be returned.

Students

  • students of the first and second cycle programmes as well as one cycle master's programmes:
    • a personal identity card;
    • an electronic student identity card.
      After activating, the electronic student ID card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.
  • students of the post-graduate programmes:
    • a personal identity card;
    • a list of a programme's participants from the relevant faculty.
      The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.
  • students participating in the MOST programme:
    • a personal identity card;
    • a document confirming their participation in the programme.
      The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.
  • foreign students of the Jagiellonian University under the Erasmus programme:
    • ID (for citizens of the EU countries – a personal identity card or a passport; for persons from the non-EU countries – a passport);
    • a valid electronic student identity card.
      The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.
  • foreign students of the Jagiellonian University who are to stay less than three months:
    • ID (for citizens of the EU countries – a personal identity card or a passport; for persons from the non-EU countries – a passport.
      The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms only.
  • Ph.D. students:
    • a personal identity card;
    • a valid Ph.D. student card.
      The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.
      Note:
      Only persons actually doing research or didactic work within the Jagiellonian University as well as participants of doctoral studies are regarded as Ph.D. students, and not those who are connected to the Jagiellonian University merely through a supervisor of their thesis.

The Jagiellonian University's staff

  • faculty members:
    • a personal identity card;
    • a current entry at the University's website/a valid employee ID card/an employment contract/a pledge of guarantee which is valid up to 30 days from the date of issue.
      The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.
  • non-faculty staff:
    • a personal identity card;
      a current entry at the University's website/a valid employee ID card/an employment contract from the current year/a pledge of guarantee which is valid up to 30 days from the date of issue.
    • The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.
  • retired University's staff:
    • a personal identity card.
      An ID confirming connection with the University.
    • The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.

Academic schools of Krakow under the agreement on cooperation and mutual services with the Jagiellonian University

students of the first  and second cycle programmes as well as one cycle master's programmes:

  • a personal identity card;
  • an electronic student identity card valid for the current semester;
  • a student record book with promotion to the current academic year if not otherwise settled directly with the director of the Jagiellonian Library.

After activating, the electronic ID card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.

Ph.D. students:

  • a personal identity card;
  • a valid Ph.D. student card.

The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.

Staff:

faculty members:

  • a personal identity card;
  • a current entry at the school's website/a valid employee ID card/employment contract from the current year/ certificate of employment which is valid up to 30 days from the date of issue.

non-faculty staff:

  • a personal identity card;
  • a valid employee ID card/employment contract from the current year/ certificate of employment which is valid up to 30 days from the date of issue.

Research workers from other institutions in Krakow:

  • a personal identity card;
  • a valid employee ID card/employment contract from the current year/ certificate of employment which is valid up to 30 days from the date of issue.
    The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.

Employees of other institutions in Krakow (in the area of science, journalism, education, culture, public administration, judiciary, health service):

  • a personal identity card;
  • a pledge of guarantee (a relevant form can be downloaded from the Library's website).
  • a certificate of employment which is valid up to 30 days from issue/ en employment contract from the current year.
    The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.

Other people working in Krakow:

  • a personal identity card;
  • a certificate of employment which is valid up to 30 days from the date of issue/ en employment contract from the current year.
    The issued library card entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms as well as to checking books out.

Scholarly and cultural institutions of Krakow, branch libraries of the Jagiellonian University:

  • a filled-out declaration (a relevant form can be downloaded from the Library's website);
    a personal identity card of the person responsible for checking out and returning books.

Students of high schools in Krakow:

  • a personal identity card/student school ID;
  • a current pledge of guarantee from their headmaster.

Short-time visitors to Krakow can, on presenting their ID, obtain a free three-day pass (once a year only), which entitles its holder to using the Library's collections in the reading rooms only for three next days.

Notice:

When the Circulation Desk is closed, a three-day pass can be issued also by a library security guard on duty by the entrance in the New Building).

The activated library card is valid:

  • until October 31, 2024 - for students, for readers borrowing on the basis of a valid service card / employment certificate / employment contract, for univerisies' libraries, scientific institutions and other Cracow institutions, for adult students of secondary and post-secondary schools.
  • until December 31, 2024 - for academic teachers and doctoral students, for readers entitled to use resources only in reading rooms, employees of the JU who are not academic teachers, librarians and employees of the JU Archives and the JU Museum.

The library cards of the JU independent research workers are valid for 5 years.​

On renewal one is supposed to present the same documents as on registration, provided there are no overdue obligations to the Library.

  • for patron registering and issuing a library card - 20 PLN;
  • for renewal of a library card or activation of an electronic student ID card – 5 PLN;
  • for issuing a duplicate library card – 25 PLN.
  • for overdue item - 0,30 PLN per day
